While many grooms may not concern themselves with floral arrangements or the intricacy of table settings, they do have the unruly task of delivering an effortless speech. Providing the perfect cocktail of sincerity and composure; it’s imperative for grooms to get this down to a T.

No-no’s

1. Don’t drink too much

Some like to tell you a little Dutch courage will go a long way, when the only way it’s really going is too far. Nobody wants to watch a groom slur his way through a speech! Refrain from succumbing to the temptation of your groomsmen and limit the number of tipples you sip until after your big moment.

2. Don’t make it too long

As a groom, you’ve the important job of thanking those who need to be recognised. The odd anecdote along the way is fine but don’t stand and tell your life story. Keep things succinct, relevant and polite!

3. Don’t crack too many jokes

Your speech isn’t the opportunity to crack a laugh from the crowds but instead to offer sincere thanks to important figures. Be witty and don’t be afraid to adopt a light-hearted tone but ensure you don’t clown around too much.

4. Avoid lists

Standing and reeling off a list of names and mundane thanks will welcome yawning faces amongst the guests. Instead, add some personal flair to your speech and don’t be afraid to show some genuine emotion- it’s endearing.

Must do’s

1. Plan ahead

One of the most crucial tips we can share with you is the power of planning. Write out your speech in full and condense it down to shorter notes – this will help to commit it to memory. Try recording yourself (no matter how cringed out you’ll be) and play it back to tweak your tone if it’s not quite right!

2. Compliment your new partner

It may seem like you could never forget to do this but nonetheless, ensure to plan this into your speech. Addressing your partner using the right terminology is crucial too. Your new husband/wife won’t appreciate the boyfriend/girlfriend slip of the tongue we can assure you!

3. Thank the in-laws

Another relatively obvious must, but a must all the same! Take time in your speech to warmheartedly acknowledge your partner’s parents as well as your own, as your spouse may not have the chance to publicly do so. After all, they’re your family now too.

4. Enjoy the process

The most clichéd ‘must-do’ on our list but quite possibly the most important of the lot. It’s your big day so make sure you have fun with your speech and that way, you’ll come across with the perfect natural tone and manner. We are sure you’ll have them eating out of the palm of your hand!
